Why waiting for a free day doesn't get you writing
A classic 1983 study tracked three groups of procrastinating writers for ten weeks. The group that waited for ideal conditions wrote the least, by far.
This chart comes from my contribution to the German academic handbook Handbuch wissenschaftlich Arbeiten (Verlag Barbara Budrich), on the thinking patterns that keep academics from writing.
In the chapter, I recommend printing this exact chart out and pinning it above your desk, a small daily reminder that showing up regularly beats waiting for the perfect moment. The labels are in German, the data speaks for itself either way.
